Best Time to Use a Washing Machine on Synergy Midday Saver

If you are on Synergy Midday Saver, the cheapest time to use your washing machine is usually between 9am and 3pm, because that is the plan's Super Off Peak window. Synergy currently lists the Super Off Peak rate at 8.6151 cents per kWh, which is far lower than the Peak rate of 53.8446 cents per kWh from 3pm to 9pm. ([Synergy][9])

That means a simple habit change can make a real difference. Instead of doing laundry after work, the cheaper strategy is to run the washing machine in the late morning or early afternoon. Synergy's own guidance says customers can save by shifting electricity use into the 9am to 3pm period and specifically mentions that there are appliances that are easy to use in Off Peak and Super Off Peak periods. If you cannot use the machine during the day, the next best window is generally 9pm to 9am, when the Midday Saver Off Peak rate applies. Synergy currently lists that rate at 23.6916 cents per kWh. It is not as cheap as the midday period, but it is still much cheaper than running loads during the expensive 3pm to 9pm peak window. ([Synergy][9])

So the ranking is straightforward:

  • Best: 9am to 3pm
  • Second-best: 9pm to 9am
  • Worst: 3pm to 9pm ([Synergy][9])

This matters even more if you also have rooftop solar. Running your washing machine during the day may let you use your own solar generation at the same time, instead of exporting it for a low daytime DEBS credit. Synergy also advises customers to consider lunchtime use for appliances like dishwashers and washing machines, particularly where solar or time-of-use plans are involved. ([Synergy][8])

One detail to remember is that Midday Saver requires a compatible meter or reprogramming of an existing meter, and charges may apply if meter work is needed.

For most households, the easiest tactic is to use the delay-start button on the washing machine so the cycle begins in the 9am–3pm window. That usually gives you the cheapest power on Midday Saver without changing much else in your routine. ([Synergy][9])
